ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POLICIES AND DEVELOPMENT

ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POLICIES AND DEVELOPMENT

INDICATORS OF DEVELOPMENT

After #independence, #development meant, building or #providing a higher #standard_of_living for the #people by constructing more and and better facilities like schools, hospitals, post offices, railway lines, road network, bridges, houses, airports, colleges, police stations and power stations. But, today, development means more than that. There is a need for #sustainable #employment and #empowerment. #Government also tries to provide social amenities to the citizens. These are football stadia, golf clubs, recreation parks, libraries, town social halls, public swimming pools, cinema halls, tourism centres et cetera. These are called #Social_development facilities and are meant to improve the welfare of citizens socially. These are called #Social_indicators of development.

Note: #Indicators_of_development are signs of changes in the social, cultural, economic and political life of the people in a country.

The economy and economic policies of Zambia have undergone many changes since 1964. And, the citizens have been consistent on constituting governments that could improve their standards of living.

Here, #economy means a system used by a country to produce and distribute goods and services. An #economic_policy is a decision made and implemented by a government to achieve the goals of economic development. This is done in order to enhance democracy, and human rights protection.

Each government which come into office tries its best to #produce more #goods_and_services to improve standard of living of the people. We call this process #economic_development. This may include more TV sets, hospitals, houses, cars, food, clothes, good sanitation, clean piped water and so on. These are #economic_indicators of development in society. Other indicators of development are:

*More #employment and better #salary and conditions of #service

*More #foreign_exchange and #export

*More goods and services i.e #Mass_production

*Healthy and #educated nation

*Better #welfare and more #school places

*Better #roads and #telecommunication services

*More #food

*Specialisation and #industrialisation

*High per capita income. This is an average income per year per person in a country. #Per_capita_income is worked out from Gross National Product (#GNP) and Gross Domestic Product (#GDP). GDP is the total wealth in goods and services produced per year by a country. GNP is the total wealth of a country produced by a country from both local and foreign trade.

*Improved life expectancy for citizens: Low death rates, low infant mortality rates, and reduced disease outbreak intails higher life expectancy. This is the average additional years a person is expected to live if environmental conditions were to remain constant. #Life_expectancy for Zambia may be as low as 40 - 50 years because of #poverty.

*More local #investment and most of all

*Respect for #human_rights and #democratic_governance.
